Mobilising Global Support for Comprehensive Sexuality Education

Partner: UNESCO

What We Did

  • We worked with UNESCO to develop and implement a global advocacy campaign promoting Comprehensive Sexuality Education (CSE)
  • We produced intergenerational stories with families from Chile, Ghana, Thailand and the UK
  • We rolled out global digital engagement through #CSEandMe
  • We designed advocacy materials for policymakers, educators and community leaders

Challenge

  • CSE is a curriculum‑based approach that equips young people with knowledge, life skills and confidence to navigate puberty, relationships, gender, consent and sexual health.
  • Despite strong evidence that CSE promotes safer behaviours and builds respectful relationships, many policymakers and communities viewed sexuality education as sensitive or contentious.
  • UNESCO recognised that technical guidance alone would not shift public discourse or policy.

Strategy

  • We developed an advocacy campaign that made CSE relatable, human, and actionable – showing shared lived experiences around learning about sex, relationships and respect
  • We produced a series of intergenerational stories highlighting common experiences for children and parents – such as embarrassment and misinformation
  • We highlighted the shared desire for future generations to have a better experience of CSE

Impact

The #CSEandMe campaign helped to:
  • Reduce stigma by reframing CSE around dignity, equality and life skills
  • Increase support for CSE across Latin America, Asia, Africa and beyond.
  • Increase policymaker awareness of evidence linking CSE to improved youth wellbeing
  • Empower young people and families to engage in national and local conversations about sexuality education.
