Launching the UN Decade of Ocean Science - Mobilising a Global Ocean Movement

Turning a complex UN framework into a globally recognised mission

Partner: Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO (IOC-UNESCO)

What We Did

Flinch partnered with the IOC of UNESCO to design and implement a multi-year communications strategy supporting the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021–2030).

Our work transformed a highly technical UN initiative into a globally recognised movement — positioning ocean science as essential for addressing climate change, biodiversity loss, food security and sustainable development.

We created a unified narrative and brand architecture that governments, scientists, NGOs, youth networks and philanthropists could adopt globally while maintaining local relevance.

Through digital platforms, multimedia storytelling and strategic engagement with global influencers and partners, the initiative positioned ocean science as a shared global mission — not just a research agenda.

The launch of the Decade generated strong early support from governments, institutions and civil society, helping catalyse international collaboration and investment in ocean science.

Challenge

The UN Decade of Ocean Science represents a ten-year global framework to mobilise science, policy, finance and community action for healthier oceans.

While scientifically robust, the initiative was highly technical and risked remaining confined to scientific and policy communities.

For the Decade to succeed, it needed to inspire participation from governments, youth, philanthropists, civil society and industry — translating complex ocean science into something accessible, compelling and actionable.

The challenge was to create communications capable of cutting through complexity, unifying global stakeholders and catalysing real engagement and investment in ocean solutions.

Strategy

Flinch approached the project through a behaviour-change and storytelling lens.

We translated technical ocean science into human-centred narratives showing why oceans matter to everyday life — from food security and livelihoods to climate resilience and biodiversity protection.

We created a flexible global brand and messaging architecture aligned with the Decade’s seven outcomes, enabling governments, NGOs and scientific institutions worldwide to adopt and adapt the initiative while maintaining a coherent global narrative.

Digital storytelling, multimedia campaigns and influencer partnerships helped broaden the reach beyond policy audiences, positioning ocean science as a shared global responsibility.
